Anna Twigg- Finland

Finland is concerned with the Humanitarian crisis in Syria, and believes that the united Nations is responsible for providing aid. Under the leadership of president Salvi Niinisto, Finland has pledged a donation of 3.5 million euros towards the conflict, and has recently added 1.1 million, half of which goes towards UNICEF efforts, the other towards the World Heath organization. Niinisto has proposed that the United Nations hold a meeting in regard to the crisis.Finland supports all UN peace efforts by deploying soldiers, policemen, and experts trained in civilian crisis management. President Niinisto realizes that the usage of chemical weapons is a serious crime against humanity, and that a solution that is solely political is unlikely, and will probably have to be backed by some kind of force.

The conflict, originates from the Syrian government, run by the Alawite minority of the country, attempting to suppress protests for democracy during the Arab spring. The violence surrounding the protests has lead to mass immigration from Syria to surrounding countries such as Turkey. The government is determined to smack down on protestors through any means necessary, including indiscriminately shooting into crowds, mass killings of civilians, and widespread arrests. Countless crimes against humanity have been committed, including the use of chemical warfare. While several economic sanctions, being kicked out of the Arab League, and warnings from the United Nations,
The conflict in Syria has shown no sign of coming to an independent solution.

The Finnish president, Savli Niinisto, is offering a home to a minimum of five hundred syrian refugees, and is willing to exceed thier quotas to take in even more. His decision is still in the process of being approved by the finnish congress. If Finland's move toward aiding the Syrians in their time of crisis, it could light the way for other countries to follow their footsteps by taking in and providing for refugees of the conflict. Finland has also been the only country within the European Union to offer to destruct the entirety of Syria's chemical weapons. They understand that destroying the weapons will be a delicate and lengthy process, but are determined to stop the usage of chemical weapons, and are constantly asking other countries to lend a hand. Without the chemical warfare that provides the muscle for the country's military power, Syria will be prevented from committing further destruction or adding to their long list of casualties. Finland has also worked funding towards crisis management into their budgeting, and works alongside other European Union members to provide aid for those in Syria.
