Beginning in March of 2011, Syria has been violating the civil rights of its citizens under the Syrian government leader, Bashar Al-Assad. Because of how close in distance Kuwait is to Syria, Kuwait as been a character in this on going war between the Syrian nation and its people. The close proximity between the two nations causes concern for the Kuwaiti government and its people because of the use of chemical weapons. Although, they are only trying to help resolve the conflict in Syria, they are still concerned for the safety of the Kuwaiti citizens.

Syria has had struggles with equality and civil right since the end of WWI. When Syria became a French colony after being dismissed from the Ottoman Empire, they were people representing many diverse religions. The country did not know how to handle this diversity and became very unstable. Their current leader Bashar Al- Assad was elected in the year 2000. The citizens of Syria became to protests for their rights and equality. This became known as Damascus Spring. Assad did not want Damascus Spring to get serious but in 2011 riots and protests began to break out which led the Syrian country toward failure. Today, more than 100,000 people have died due to a deadly nerve gas that is used to harm others and the riots still continue. As a fellow member nation of the United Nations, other nations are working to get rid of the nerve gas and riots as well as raise funds to help those who are suffering.

Kuwait is a big help to the Syrian nation. The Kuwaiti government has helped to raise over 1 billion dollars to go towards the Syrian relief. They are still working hard to help its member nation. As for Syria, it is necessary that the government decide on a plan to get the nerve gas out of contact with the citizens to decrease the future deaths. The government needs to enforce disciplinary actions towards the rioters. Protesting may be a civil right, but causing chaos and harming others is unlawful.
