The government of Syria has repeatedly violated the rights of its citizens, it has become apparent that this is a problem that needs worldwide attention. The Assad regime has ruled Syria since 1971. Protests originally begun due to government corruption as well as response to the Arab spring. The Syrian Army quickly responded to these the rebel’s demonstrations with extreme violence and mass killings. But the corruption in Syria has only worsened. The death toll from has risen to 100,000 and continues to climb. The Syrian government is illegally obtaining protesters, using chemical weapons against its own citizens, killing left and right. Finland will continue to allow escaped Syrians to take asylum in Finland and created safe areas including relief services to citizen fleeing the civil war. Finland proposes a light armed peacekeeping force as an introduction to the power that the UN could impose on Syria. If conditions continue to worsen a heaver military force should be inflicted.

This Crisis in Syria originated when a long line of the al-Assad family took rule in 1970. Hafiz al-Assad, father of current leader of Syria, created the authoritarian regime. Under the Syrian constitution Hafiz kept Syria in a constant State of Emergency thus suspended almost all individual rights of citizens giving almost complete power to the central government. This made suppression of attempted protests easy to destroy and use fear to prevent any other sort of rally. Hafiz also used violence as his son does today, he killed over 10,000 of his own citizens when stopping an uprising. Not much has changed now that Bashad al-Assad is president.Though the state of Emergency was lifted by Bashad the corruption and violence toward citizens continues to persist. Both the United States as well as the United nations have imposed economic sanctions on Syria for their repeated human rights violations. Economic sanctions have proved unsuccessful. Organizations as NATO and like NATO are reluctant to take military action. Humanitarian aid has been delivered to host communities that have fled from the conflict. Though we seem to be ignoring the fact that thousands of Syrians are still dying because of their own corrupt government. They are being deprived of their rights. We need cut off the problem at its source. People are rebelling because of the government and citizens are dying by the hand of the government. Humanitarian aid is important as is destroying chemical weapons but we need to take a more assertive approach to the derivation of this crisis. If the more peaceful approaches do not reach a permanent solution to the Syrian crisis trying Bashad al-Assad is in order.

Finland proposes a light peacekeeping force to calm the killings that the Syrian government has been imposing on its people. A small army of United Nation peace keepers will be stationed in large cities and towns to keep the peace and will have the right to fine and arrest government officials who are neglecting the rights of their citizens. This is only temporary and will not fix what Syrians are fighting for. It will keep the peace long enough to destroy chemical weapons that were threatened to be utilized and take the danger of chemical warfare out of the equation leaving the Syrian government with less power. Finland will continue to allow citizens live safely in host communities in which Finland will continue to send Humanitarian aid to. Lastly trying the president in the international criminal court will be our final course of action. This will hopefully cause the government to lose its leader to the crimes he has committed and thus collapsing the Syrian army which has been terrorizing protesters. Then finally the United Nations peacekeeping force will help to rebuild war-torn communities and construct a democracy where voters can vote for their new leader without the corruption on their previous regime.
